about

I wrote this song a week after the Twin Towers came down on 9-11-200.
I love this artwork by Laurie Eastwood.

lyrics

The Future

The future ain’t what the future used to be
There’s smoke and ash comin’ from my TV
I can’t believe what happened today
They burned down the bridge to yesterday
And the future ain’t what the future used to be

Nothin’s gonna be the way it was before
They’re talkin’ about some brand new kind of war
Yesterday things were hummin’ a long
Now there’s a hole in the city, it’s 10 blocks long
The future ain’t what the future used to be

Somebody hates me, somebody I don’t even know
He’s willing to kill himself just to see me go
And I don’t know how it came to be
How’d I get to be his worst enemy
I guess the future ain’t what the future used to be

What does it mean when life means nothing at all
When killers are heroes and the true heroes must fall
So many people paid the ultimate toll
I can still hear the echo of the words “Let’s roll!”
But the future ain’t what the future used to be

The future ain’t what the future used to be
What’s it’s going to mean to livein’ the land of the free
Everything is different as of today
But there’s one thing for sure we know can say
The future ain’t what the future used to be
